Historically, the Academy Awards or the Oscars, as they are popularly referred to, are a big deal. This year was no different. Celebrities took it upon themselves to showcase the glamor and elegance of the big screen. From director Regina King, who shone brightly in her royalty-inspired gown, to little Alan Kim, whose appearance uplifted the show with a message of hope and optimism, the event was nothing short of a spectacle.
The highlight of the ceremony is the outlandish clothes. Here are the top ten Oscar 2021 dresses that designers should watch out for.
Inspired by the late icon Prince’s outfit at the 1985 Oscars, H.E.R. wore a custom hooded ensemble with a flowing cape, covered with glittering embellishments. The lyrics of her nominated song “Fight for you” were emblazoned on the border of the cape and pants. Her outfit definitely made a bold statement, leaving everyone awestruck.
The Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom actress has always been in the limelight for her stunning Oscar dresses, and this year was no exception. With fabulous detailing and intricate designs, her stunning white gown has already made it to the list of dream dresses for brides-to-be.
Dressed in a yellow cut-out custom dress with Bulgari jewelry and Jimmy Choo heels, Zendaya hit the Oscar red carpet for the third time. Like every year, the actress’s outfit at the Oscars was iconic and eye-catching. Her midriff-baring number was supposedly accessorized with jewelry worth more than US$6 million.
Just like the 2019 Oscars, Bassett amazed us in her voluminous creations this year too. Her off-the-shoulder red gown with full, draped organza shoulders, a high slit, and a long train was one of the best Oscar 2021 dresses. Pairing it with jewelry from Chopard, she certainly outdid everyone and set a new benchmark in royalty-inspired clothing.
It is almost impossible to pick one single outfit from the red carpet that tops it all, but this time is an exception. ‘Take me back to the 70s’, is the first thought that ran through everyone’s mind with Stanfield’s super sexy and charismatic look in his Saint Laurent jumpsuit and freshly bleached hair. His look was one of an artist; a genderfluid and subtle style.
The dress that outdid the Oscar statue itself – Carey Mulligan in her two-piece gold gown, decked in pearls and sequins, intended to win hearts on and off the red carpet. With a casually done bun and accessories from Cartier, Mulligan looked breathtakingly beautiful and certainly aced the Oscar 2021 dresses.
The actor probably wanted to set the bar for menswear even higher when he set foot on the red carpet dressed head-to-toe in hot pink. The three-piece suit is believed to feature 150 hours of embroidery work, and the intricate details have already won hearts all over the internet.
The critically-acclaimed Minari’s 9-year-old star Alex Kim was the showstopper of the 2021 Oscars with his fresh and dapper ensemble. Dressed in a classic shorts suit and knee-high socks, little Alex stole the spotlight. To complement his look, producer Christina Oh wore a Hanbok-inspired suit by Mee Hee Hanbok.
Regina King wore one of the most elegant Oscar 2021 dresses. The Oscar-winning actress wore a figure-sculpting pale blue satin dress with a plunging neckline that extended outwards in the shape of butterfly wings. According to Vogue, the most significant detail of the ensemble was the record-breaking number of Swarovski crystals. Lined with 62,000 sequins, 3,900 sparkling stones, and 4,500 darker stones, this dress took a good 140 hours to make.
Talk about out-of-the-box, and we have Laura Dern topping the list of the most memorable Oscar 2021 dresses. The actress showed up in an ornately feathered white skirt and a black turtleneck top. A fan on Instagram praised this striking monochrome as “the epitome of minimalist meets eccentricity.” She brought an element of unusual chic to the red carpet which no one is likely to forget in a hurry.
