The 93rd Academy Awards were presented in Los Angeles. The event looked very different from previous years. It had a remote virtual presence, and it also ensured social distancing on the red carpet and throughout the show. Despite this, the event didn’t disappoint. Oscars Looks 2021 are still fuelling Twitter feeds throughout the world.
Whether it is the most bizarre outfit or the most outlandish hair-do, the Oscars traditionally never fail to serve up a slice of glamour, hype and controversy. Whether it is Halle Berry being swept up in a kiss by Adrien Brody after being presented with the Best Actor Award in 2003 or the power going out as the cast of Parasite delivered their acceptance speech in 2020, the Oscars have had their share of unusual moments.
Oscar fashions have been a different story altogether. Angelina Jolie’s thigh-high slit at the 2012 Oscars inspired countless memes, including the infamous #AngiesRightLeg. There was even a Twitter account for her left leg, since her right leg allegedly got all the attention! Nothing quite so dramatic at the Oscars in 2021, but it did have its fair share of drama. Let’s take a look at the best reactions:
Hairstylists Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, along with Sergio Lopez-Rivera won the Academy Award for hairstyling and make-up on "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom." What an achievement! Variety tweeted: “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” hair department head Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, hairstylist to Oscar-nominated actor Viola Davis, made history on Monday when they became the first Black women to be nominated for makeup and hairstyling.”
Zendaya has been no stranger to the Oscars red carpet and hence must feature in the top Oscars Looks 2021. This year, for the 93rd Academy Awards 2021, she decided to go with a neon yellow silk chiffon dress created by Valentino. The actress paired this gorgeous gown with 183-carat Bulgari diamonds. Twitter and other fashion magazines lost no time in lavishing praise. MTV tweeted: “A masterpiece in three parts.”
Halle Berry has been pulling off one of the best red carpet looks for years now. In 2002, when she won the award for the best actress in a leading role, she became the first black woman to receive this award. For this year's Oscars, she selected a gown from Dolce and Gabbana. It was a purple gown with a sweet neckline and a bow in the waistline. What made her stand out was the new blunt bob haircut.
Twitter did not take this new haircut positively, and some users complained that the haircut did not go well with the gown. Cosmopolitan tweeted: "Our distaste for the problematic Dolce & Gabbana may be coloring our opinion here, but we don't love the hue, and the design is so generic that she could've gotten anyone else to make it for her. The blunt bob was such a surprise that it almost pulls focus, but overall, this look doesn't work for us."
The director of One Night in Miami, Regina King, captivated the internet with her spectacular Oscar's looks in 2021. Regina King arrived on the red carpet wearing a custom-made Louis Vuttion, Tiffany-blue, butterfly style look. The gown custom designed by Nicolas Ghesquière had a plunging neckline and 80's style shoulders.
The gown had more than 60,000 sequins. It required one hundred forty hours to complete the look. It was no minor achievement for a queen. It's no wonder the internet exploded in admiration. She revealed her outfit on social media, then graced the carpet with One Night In Miami star Aldis Hodge. Tweets like "dead by Louis Vuitton", "Regina King just sent everyone else HOME", "Regina King dresses like she knows exactly who she is," flooded the internet.
Promising young female star Cary Mulligan left everyone awestruck with her red carpet appearance at the Oscars 2021. She was decked up in a golden metallic skirt and a bandeau top created by Valentino couture. She accessorized this with high jewelry, earrings and classic glamour makeup to compete for the look. The look was bold, chic and represented her confident side. Twitter was filled with comments of appreciation for Cary Mulligan. Tweets like "iconic", "Star has arrived," appeared on the Twitter handles.
