The theme for Met Gala 2021 was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” As everyone knows about America’s rich history regarding fashion, the anticipation was relatively high. A lot of us wondered what the celebrity guests would be wearing. Going by the theme was an excellent opportunity for fashion designers and stylists to let out their creativity and artistry truly.
One look that caught everyone’s eye was the Kim Kardashian Met Gala look. While many guests made political statements and played it safe, Kim was a big exception to all this. She came covered in black fabric. By covered, we mean entirely covered from head to toe, literally! Her face was not even visible to the audience.
The Kim Kardashian Met Gala Look
Met Gala 2021 did not impress the public as well as fashion experts. But, Kim Kardashian was an exception with her Black Balenciaga bodysuit. She wore a bodysuit that covered her whole face.
Kim’s face was covered entirely in black fabric, but of course, she was recognizable. A lot of expectations were riding on Kim’s look, but she pulled a completely unexpected outfit this time.
She was seen wearing heels and did her hair in a ponytail. But, it’s not just your regular ponytail. Kim was wearing 75 inches of hair extensions. There was nothing ordinary about the floor-length locks as well. It costs a whopping amount of $10K.
While there were reports by TMZ that her estranged husband, Kanye West, encouraged her to look, we can’t say anything for sure. A lot of sources stated that Kanye was the one who gave Kim the courage to push the envelope with creativity.
The all-black Balenciaga ensemble complimented her body well. Many fans compared her look to that of a ‘dementor’ from Harry Potter. The stark silhouette of her look was somewhat representing the masked era.
Rewriting Red Carpet Rules?
What’s interesting is that Kim’s look made her recognizable only from her distinctive silhouette. The majority of the fans were more into her Kendal Jenner, her half-sister’s bejeweled look.
Going for a glittery approach, Kendall’s photo with Kim showed complete contrast. As expected, the shot of the sisters gave birth to numerous memes on social media.
Kim’s date for Met Gala 2021 was designer Demna Gvasalia, who also matched Kim’s look and wore a covered outfit. Love it or hate it, you’re still talking about it. That’s precisely what happened with the Kim Kardashian Met Gala dress.
It will go down as one of the most iconic looks in the history of the Met Gala, regardless of the mixed reviews. Taking to her social media account, the prolific star posted on Instagram, “What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!”
Another exciting thing Kim did before attending the red carpet event was doing a photoshoot against a black backdrop in her face-obscuring ensemble. Many believed that wearing a mysterious and minimalist design was somewhat influenced by the desire of Kanye West for Kim to wear modest dresses.
However, the fans of Keeping Up with the Kardashians feel that her fashion has been evolving following her divorce from Kanye. For the past many years, Kanye has been dominating Kim Kardashian’s fashion choices.
Fans’ Reaction: Yay or Nay?
Kim explained her all-black look by saying it did tie to the theme of the Met Gala 2021 evening. The theme required the stars to wear couture that would embody American Independence.
Many political statements and tributes to icons were seen, but Kim took a literal approach. Her post on Instagram of the dress saw mixed reactions from fans. Under her post, most of them were applauding it.
They loved the innovative take of Kim and complimented her faceless, endless hair train and comfy look. Some encouraged her, saying she was taking fashion in a new direction.
While giving an exciting observation, a user pointed out how she was the most talked about person at the event, but nobody could even see her. The user stated it was legendary, and nothing gets more American than Kim Kardashian West.
Nonetheless, everyone searched for Kim Kardashian Met Gala despite the negative reactions. So, it does not matter if people loved it or hated it because she got people talking regardless. All publicity is good publicity, eh?
