What is Cashmere Fabric?

Cashmere comes from the word ‘Kashmir’, the northern part of India that has been home to manufacturing cashmere fabric for thousands of years. It is obtained from the coat of Cashmere and Pashmina goats that are typically found in and around Central Asia and the Gobi Desert. However, it has now been expanded to America and Europe who have developed their industries.

Cashmere is said to be the finest and most expensive variety of wool that can be made into cardigans, sweaters, scarves, and so on. What makes Cashmere different from others is the fact that it's softer, finer, and better than other varieties of wool. Cashmere cardigans are extremely comfortable, safe, and elegant. No wonder cashmere accounts for one of the most expensive fabrics available in the market.

What is Cashmere used for?

Due to its superior quality, cashmere fabric is used in manufacturing innumerable clothes that can be worn both indoors and outdoors. Cashmere sweaters, cardigans, trench coats, and scarves are quite common these days. Moreover, women’s cashmere sweaters are an instant favorite in the market.

Did you know that Cashmere is used in making underwear as well? You must wonder why. It is solely because of its delicate, soft, and gentle nature that provides an enhanced sense of luxury while wearing. Cashmere is also incredibly easy to work with and can be modified into exquisite pieces of clothes.

It can also be made into different accessories like gloves, socks, shawls, and mufflers. Moreover, even Cashmere blankets are gaining popularity now. Since they're soft, warm, and luxurious at the same time, everyone craves this fabric.

What are the Different Categories of Cashmere?

Different Categories of Cashmere

Cashmere fabric may look simple but it is further divided into five sub-categories. The different types of Cashmere available in the fashion industry are Pashmina Wool, Cashmere Wool, Grade A Cashmere, Grade B Cashmere, and Grade C Cashmere.

Let's have a detailed insight into each category of Cashmere and its prices.

  • Cashmere Wool

Cashmere blankets and women cashmere sweaters are quite a hit in the markets as cashmere is the finest and the best quality of this fabric which is superior to all the other types. It is soft, warm, and strong as well. It is extremely expensive and usually not affordable to most.

  • Pashmina Wool

Pashmina wool is obtained from Pashmina goats and it is often confused with cashmere. However, they're extremely different and possess different qualities. Pashmina is an amalgamation of several different materials but it is not the case with cashmere. It is priced more reasonably than cashmere. It's affordable for a common man.

  • Grade A Cashmere

Do you know why some cashmere scarves are super soft? It’s because they’re made with Grade A Cashmere, which is said to be the most expensive among the lot. It has about 14 microns width per hair which makes the fabric extremely soft and comfortable. You'll know it's worth it when you touch it.

  • Grade B Cashmere

Grade B Cashmere has around 18-19 microns width per hair which means the quality falls flat after Grade A. It is not as soft and maybe slightly scratchy and rough. It is priced variably less than Grade A. The quality is intermediate as well.

  • Grade C Cashmere

This has the worst quality of cashmere fabric. It is extremely rough, thicker than the other, and uncomfortable. It is very cheap as well and maybe priced half or less than the others. It is usually made into clothes that have less or no contact with your skin.

Bottom Line

cashmere is eco-friendly, biodegradable, and poses no threat to the environment in any way

Cashmere fabric has secured a market of its own now. Owing to its best-in-class quality and comfortable feel, it is used extensively in making sweaters, scarves, socks, and so on.

Being a natural fiber, cashmere is eco-friendly, biodegradable, and poses no threat to the environment in any way. It also helps in supporting the cottage industries that manufacture and market the fiber. Cashmere is a safe, reliable, and comfortable alternative as compared to synthetic fibers like polyester, or nylon that are non-biodegradable and toxic to the environment.

We've tried to cover all the aspects of the cashmere fabric that you may have doubts about. From their categories to their prices, we've tried our best to give you a profound understanding of the glorious world of cashmere. It's high time that we start choosing natural and non-toxic fibers over the other fibers that are available in the market. Cashmere is the first step towards it.
